Then they were on the move, on the bike and back to the house they’d just left. Calvin knew it was the place where most gang members lived. He wasn’t sure why Davis was allowed to have his own apartment, but he was grateful for it. He wanted to ask questions, but it became harder and harder the closer they came to the house. Calvin tensed so much that he felt like he might break if anyone touched him.

Then Davis parked in front of the house.

Calvin sucked in a breath, even though it felt like he couldn’t breathe, and he climbed off the bike. He looked up at the house, and from outside, it looked just like a house anyone would live in. It was huge, but that wasn’t unusual when shifters lived together. There were so many packs and prides and other groups who wanted to live as a family unit.

But the Beasts weren’t a family unit. They were a gang, and they were dangerous.

“Remember what I told you,” Davis murmured as he and Calvin walked toward the house. “Talk only when you’re asked. Don’t look anyone in the eyes if you can avoid it. Keep your head down. Play shy. Let me speak.”

Calvin had no problem with any of that. If anything, he couldn’t wait to keep his mouth shut.

They walked in. Calvin had to force himself to breathe. He couldn’t freak out, or rather, he could, but he couldn’t show the Beasts he was.

The entrance was empty, and Davis took a right, walking down a hallway. Calvin followed him, wishing he could take Davis’ hand but not knowing if that was allowed. Probably not. Even if the Beasts didn’t kick Davis out right away because he was gay, they probably would frown on any sign of affection between two guys.

Davis stopped in front of a door, looked at Calvin, then knocked.

“Come in,” a loud voice called out.

They obeyed. Calvin took small, short breaths, his heart racing, and his stomach feeling like he might throw up. He hoped he wouldn’t.

“Bates,” Davis said. “You wanted to see us.”

Calvin sucked in a breath when he saw Bates wasn’t alone. The man he supposed was Bates was sitting behind a desk, but there was another man on the other side of it. The guy didn’t seem to care about their presence, though, and it helped Calvin relax, albeit just a tiny bit.

“What happened?” Bates asked.

Davis rubbed the back of his neck. “I already apologized, but I want to do so again. Calvin didn’t mean to make a mess. He was just worried about me. He wanted to find me.” Davis squeezed Calvin’s shoulder. “You know how mates are.”

Bates arched a brow. “Mates?”

“Yeah. We’re bonded. I probably should have brought him along with me from the beginning, but I wasn’t sure how the gang would take me being gay. I know the members aren’t always the most accepting.”

Bates his lips twisted in amusement, or at least, Calvin thought so. “You’re right. So your mate wants to be with you?”

“He does.
